Transfer Deadline Day

So I have been away for awhile and there is a lot i could talk about from the SAG awards to the Royal Wedding Updates but I am going to give my take on deadline day for football aka soccer specifically on Chelsea and Liverpool considering that is what people are buzzing about and ironically although not normal they are two teams I follow but with Chelsea being where my heart truly lies.

The news of the transfer that Chelsea acquired I am ecstatic about. I never thought I would ever see Fernando Torres join the club considering he has been linked to it before and denied a contract during the World Cup. However, now that Fernando Torres actually joined Chelsea today is mind boggling but I still am have trouble wrapping my head around it. I have always been a Torres supporter and think he is a great player but I only ever saw him as a Liverpool player especially how he talked about the club when he joined from Athletico Madrid in 2007. Talking about the clubs history and he even had the arm band "never walk alone" on when he was at Athletico before he came to Anfield. His relationship with the players especially that of Steven Gerrard was a bromance of sorts. Then he signed a new contract after the World Cup seeing the new direction Liverpool was going in since slipping from 2nd position and getting a new manager since Benitez was sacked. Those two events I believe are what really lead Torres to reevaluate if he wanted to stay at Liverpool. Although Liverpool got new management, a new coach who was sacked and then a better one to take his place it was clear once Xabi Alonso left Liverpool, the team was not the same. With Xabi at Real Madrid, a top notch team that was eligible for Champions League games and had a record of metal wear plus top name players I can see why Fernando wanted to be top flight again. Liverpool have had a tough season almost to the point of deregulating and luckily got new investors in Henry who owns Fenway Sporting Company which dealt the big bucks out today too.

But what shocks me is how fast this came and how it came out of no where in a sense. I can understand why Liverpool supporters are in an uproar. Liverpool totally signed away a franchise player. Look at their site his face is plastered everywhere but no worries they want people to forget about Torres as the number 9 and have given it to Andy Carroll who has come from Newcastle. I think he is a great signing to replace Torres but do not believe he is on the same par but time will tell. Him signing along with Suarez definatley sent out the message that LIverpool are ready to return to the top of the league and are willing to spend. However listening to the commentators they have made some good point.... Liverpool have never signed away a top player like this before and have taken the American approach to signing away a player who does not wish to be at the club. The perfect example is Manny Ramirez who was on the Red Sox and wanted more money so they signed him away and got someone to replace him which is exactly what LIverpool did sent Torres packing after he put in his request and got Carroll to replace him. Though looking at the top signings and what they are worth Carroll is a relatively unknown. In my opinion he is not in the same status as Christiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Zidane players that people talk about have metal wear of some sort. But Carroll I believe has potential and will make a mark on Liverpool history. Is he worth £35 million we will see but he is young and hopefully getting off of his injury he will prove he is the investment. I mean there was talk of Capello putting him on the NT squad because of the great performances he was putting on at Newcastle. He is one of the reasons why Newcastle who were deregulated were able to be put back in the EPL due to his great performances the next year.

Although both are signings to talk about what people are buzzing about is how much teams were shelling out for the January transfer window. The total came to around £214 million with Chelsea dishing out £71 million £50 for Torres and £21 for David Luiz the Brazilian defender in just ONE DAY. Both are young players and will definitely bring the age gap up on the older squad but Im excited to see a front of Anelka, Drogba, and Torres!!! What great plays will be made and considering Torres time with Liverpool and how he scored more goals at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea has promise hopefully to the point where we will finally bring home the Champions League title and maybe do a repeat of winning the Premier League. The best news, well not necessarily but will cause drama and everyones eyes will be on it is when Liverpool plays Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Now probably most Americans will be excited for the Super Bowl, which I only watch for the commercials, but I am more excited for this match. What will the Liverpool fans shout, what will their signs say? What will Chelsea fans sign say? WIll they sing Torres or change the lyrics? What will the chemistry be like in the tunnel?? What will the reaction be between Gerrard and Torres. Is Gerrard pissed to the point where he would pull a Wayne Bridge and skip a handshake if Torres starts and is fit?

Overall, I think Chelsea got the better deal but I am a tad biased since I am a huge Torres supporter and have wanted him at the Bridge for some time. Luiz is a great sign too especially since Terry and ALex are old and more prone to injury but both will help Chelsea move forward. Turbo Torres when hes on form he is incredible but the World Cup and this season at Anfield with injuries is understandable to bring up some concern. However he will be at Chelsea for 5 1/2 years and is in his prime. Hello he was on the WC squad and did score the winning goal in the Euros!!! But it still will take time for my eyes to adjust to him in the Chelsea kit considering how much Liverpool merchandise has his number and face on it. I even have a Liverpool Torres jersey, to get a Chelsea one too??? Hmm But he will always have a place in his heart for Liverpool. As they say You Never Walk Alone but Torres definitely has crossed that line and is Walking Alone to the enemy. I seriously never saw this ever coming. I mean Nike did a commercial teaching Spanish to Liverpoolians about Torres. As you can tell I am more excited but still have a little shock of him leaving a team he cared about so much. After a couple of games it should sink in.

Anyways I'll Leave ya with some of Torres word on joing Chelsea and how he doesn't plan on going any where else!!! Here's to Sunday and an epic game and for what to come!

So, after this, there are no more steps forward. This is the top level. The target for every footballer is to try and play at one of the top-level clubs in the world, and I can do it now. I have to be very, very happy as I am. The last three or four days have been very hard for me, especially after everything I have lived in Liverpool.

"But, as I said before, I can say I'm a Chelsea player now. I'm really happy and I'm sure I am doing one big step forward in my career joining a club like Chelsea. This is a great club, a real responsibility and everyone is expecting great things about me and I'm prepared and ready for the challenge."
